Gerrard released on bail

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been released on bail after denying assault and affray.

Gerrard, 28, was arrested on December 29 last year after a brawl at the Lounge Inn in Southport left a 34-year-old man with facial injuries.

The England midfielder has been bailed to appear at Crown Court on March 20, where he is expected to plead not guilty to all charges.

Gerrard was charged along with John Doran (29) and Ian Smith (19) after window replacement company director Marcus McGee, who had been DJing at the club, lost a tooth and received hospital treatment to a cut head.

Doran and Smith also pleaded not guilty to assault and affray charges at North Sefton Magistrates' Court.

Gerrard could face up to five years in prison if convicted of the attack.

Chelsea's Terry out of FA Cup tie

John Terry has been ruled out of Chelsea's FA Cup tie against Ipswich on Saturday after the latest in a long line of back injuries.

The Chelsea and England captain suffered a spasm in his back during the warm-up for last Saturday's league match against Stoke and what was initially thought to be a minor problem has lingered.

John Mikel Obi will also miss the fourth round match, the Nigerian midfielder being suspended, but Didier Drogba is back in Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad after being dropped for Chelsea's last two matches.

Transfer Talk: Beckham to leave US

David Beckham looks set to leave America, but who is going to sign him?

Well, there's a clue in the picture, because Milan are close to a deal that will see him stay at the San Siro.

Beckham has started both of Milan's Serie A games since arriving on loan from LA Galaxy, and his performance level and commitment have pleasantly surprised coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Milan - no strangers to wringing every last drop of juice out of ancient players - are convinced that the 33-year-old Beckham has a couple of years left in him.

Goldenballs is delighted at being used as more than a bit-part player and has even started learning the language which, it seems, is more than he ever did at Real Madrid.

Becks is a free agent at the end of the MLS season in October, and a little persuasion, Silvio Berlusconi style, might see him released from his obligations in time to start the 2009-10 season in Milan.

Everton's desperate search for a striker has led them to Werder Bremen's Hugo Almeida.

The Portuguese, who does a nice line in Tevez-esque goal celebrations featuring children's dummies, said: "I am open to offers and am happy that Everton are interested in my services."

But across Stanley Park, Liverpool are planning to hijack the bid. You know, just to mess with the Toffees.

One rumour that, like R. Kelly, believes it can fly but actually can do no such thing, is Dirk Kuyt to Juventus for £28m.

Not only is it preposterous on every conceivable level, Kuyt's 'team' do not even know about Juve's interest.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is promising to pick the weakest team he possibly can for tomorrow's FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

Whether that means he will put Giovani dos Santos in goal and Ben Alnwick up front remains to be seen, but this is one game no Spurs player wants to be involved in as selection represents a vote of no confidence from the increasingly irate gaffer.

Two of the first names on the team sheet will be Darren Bent and David Bentley, who may not be moping around much longer thanks to interest from Sunderland and Middlesbrough respectively.

Spurs are looking to recoup some of the £30m outlay on Jermain Defoe and Wilson Palacios, and could accept cut-price offers (that means just seven figures, bargain fans) for Bent and Bentley.

Having just trousered £14m for Craig Bellamy, West Ham are preparing to spend more than half of it on cosmopolitan Brescia striker Savio Nsereko, who was born in Uganda, has German nationality and plays in the Italian second division.

It seems like a lot of money for a player nobody has ever heard of, but Hammers technical director Gianluca Nani obviously likes what he sees.

West Ham hope to make an official announcement after tomorrow's embarrassing FA Cup exit at Hartlepool.

The Hammers have been told they will have fork out £8m if they want anything to do with Cardiff City's Joe Ledley.

Red Bull Salzburg striker Marc Janko has already scored 30 league goals this season, 45 in all competitions, which probably says more about the standard of Austrian football than it does about Janko.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce likes the Alpine Marco Negri , but not that much. He has lodged a final £6m bid.

Just a few weeks after being jeered by his own fans, Emmanuel Eboue is set for a new Arsenal contract after a bid from Atletico Madrid was rejected.

Portsmouth are set to make a final bid to bring Gary O'Neil back from Middlesbrough and believe that if £2.5m doesn't turn Steve Gibson's head, nothing will.

Hull have completed the permanent signing of defender Kamil Zayatte from Young Boys and hope to add Jimmy Bullard in the next few days. Stelios Giannakopoulos has left the KC Stadium and fled to Larissa.

And we couldn't leave without a Manchester City rumour - they are closing on a £10m deal for Newcastle's Shay Given.

Copa del Rey - Keita gives Mallorca edge over Betis

Alhassane Keita's goal gave struggling Real Mallorca a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Real Betis in their Copa del Rey quarter-final.

The Guinean forward evaded two defenders chasing a long ball over the top to score midway through the second-half.

Financially-troubled Mallorca's Cup run is a welcome distraction from La Liga, where they are second bottom without a win since late October.

Earlier, Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Llorente missed a first-half penalty as his side were held to a 0-0 home draw by Sporting Gijon in the first leg.

The lanky striker had the perfect chance to break the deadlock after going down to win a dubious spot kick but he blazed his effort high and wide.

Bilbao were put under constant pressure by the visitors in an open game but the 23-times Cup winners held firm to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions.

On Wednesday, holders Valencia beat 2007 winners Sevilla 3-2 at the Mestalla and Espanyol held city rivals Barcelona 0-0 at home. The second legs are next week.

Espanyol or Barca will play Mallorca or Betis for a place in May's final and Valencia or Sevilla will take on Bilbao or Sporting.

Lazio reach Coppa Italia semis

Lazio booked their place in the last four of the Coppa Italia on Thursday night with a 3-1 victory over Torino at the Stadio Olimpico. The Roman outfit went behind just before the half-hour when Cesare Natali scored.

That was how it stayed until just after the break when Goran Pandev levelled matters.

Stefano Mauri then fired Lazio ahead on 55 minutes before Tommaso Rocchi sealed the win in the final minute.

Lazio will now face the winners of the Juventus and Napoli tie, which takes place on February 4.

Inter Milan will face Sampdoria in the other semi-final clash.

Real Madrid target Wenger

Real Madrid will try to prise Arsene Wenger from Arsenal if Florentino Perez wins the Spanish club's presidential election.

Perez is bidding for a second spell as Real president, having lost out to Ramon Calderon in 2006.

It is claimed that the 61-year-old will make the capture of Wenger a key campaign pledge as he bids to return to power at the Santiago Bernabeu.

In his first term, Perez ushered in the 'Galacticos' era with the blockbuster signings of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham.

A source close to Perez told the Daily Mirror: "Florentino wants to make Wenger both coach and general manager of Real in the summer - and will promise it will happen."

Although Wenger has previously rejected Real, the offer of a general manager position would give the Frenchman complete control over scouting and transfers, which is normally denied to managers in Spain.

Perez also has a habit of doing what it takes to get his man, having based his 2000 election campaign on the seemingly impossible signing of Figo from arch-rivals Barcelona.

Calderon was forced to quit last week following a vote-rigging scandal, and the club's 70,000 members will vote for a new supremo.

Perez is prepared to spend big to revive a Real side that have slipped 12 points off the pace in La Liga, and has made Kaka and Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas his main transfer targets.

The source said: "With Kaka and Fabregas as players and Wenger as coach, Florentino will take Real back to where they should be."

Cristiano Ronaldo: I'm a good driver

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted he is "a good driver" after writing off his £200,000 Ferrari on the way to training.

The Portuguese star crashed in a tunnel near Manchester airport on January 8, causing terminal damage to his Ferrari 599 GTP Fiorano.

He denied speeding or driving carelessly, and blamed the accident on ice and oil on the surface of the A538 dual carriageway.

"I actually consider myself a good driver," Ronaldo said.

"I've never had an accident in six years, apart from this one. I was unlucky, I caught oil on the road, a bit of ice and there you are."

The 23-year-old made an unexpected half-hour cameo in United's Carling Cup victory against Derby County on Tuesday evening, and scored a penalty to end a goal drought stretching back two months.

United assistant manager Mike Phelan said: "We had a plan to get Cristiano on the pitch and hopefully give him the chance to score.

"It worked for us, he scored the penalty, so his confidence is up there again."

Hughes reveals Robinho apology

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has said Brazil star Robinho has apologised to him for leaving the Premier League club's warm weather training camp in Tenerife without permission.

And he also dismissed reports Robinho would be involved in a January transfer window swop deal with Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

Robinho flew home to Santos on a private jet and has since claimed he had to deal with a pressing family matter.

That has cut little ice with City officials who say the forward will be disciplined on his return to the club - Robinho rejoining the training camp has been ruled out because of time-difference and travel constraints.

Hughes was adamant the 24-year-old's walkout was in no way linked to the collapse of the deal to sign Robinho's fellow Brazil star Kaka and a feeling the club's grand ambitions are unlikely to be realised.

Robinho, City's leading scorer this term after arriving at Eastlands in a British transfer record £32 million deal in September from Real Madrid, is set to rejoin the squad upon their return to Manchester at the weekend.

He will be in contention to play for lowly City against Newcastle on Wednesday although by then he could have been fined a couple of weeks' wages, worth around £200,000.

"Robby left without permission and obviously felt that he had personal things to address," Hughes said.

"He made the decision to leave the camp and go back to Brazil and that wasn't with my permission," the former Wales and Blackburn boss explained.

"Once he is back I will sit down and explain my feelings on the situation and then decisions will be made after that.

"In fairness I have already spoken to him. He rang me and we had a brief chat which was obviously difficult given the language constraints but he understands that we need to address this and we will but then we will move on.

"He felt he had permission to go, that wasn't the case."

As for the suggestion Robinho's walk-out was prompted by City's failure to entice Kaka from AC Milan for what would have been a world record fee of over £100m, Hughes said: "Robby has come out and said he was on a plane to Brazil before the Kaka deal was dead and buried.

"People who are trying to link the two events are just trying to cause a little bit of mischief."

In a separate interview, former Manchester United and Chelsea striker Hughes denied suggestions Robinho was about to join the Blues.

Asked about the forward's City future, Hughes replied: "That's not up for debate." And as for Drogba, he said: "There's stories about every top player, until we make bids we can't talk about any other players.

Meanwhile Robinho, stressed his loyalty to City by telling his official website: "I have a good relationship with Mark Hughes and have always respected his decisions. He is the boss!

"I admire the Manchester City fans, who are true lovers of football and loyal to the players. I am looking forward to delivering as many goals as possible to help our team move to the next level".

City's aborted bid for Kaka was preceded by failed attempts to sign Gianluigi Buffon, Thierry Henry and the Valencia pair David Villa and David Silva, it emerged on Thursday.

None of the moves got as far as the attempt to sign Kaka with the players' current clubs all quoting exorbitant prices in an attempt to make the most of City owner Sheikh Mansour's personal fortune.

"We're not anybody's fool," City's executive chairman, Garry Cook, was quoted as telling reporters.

But any suggestion City do not overpay for players looks debatable.

This month they've spent a total of £40m pounds on Wayne Bridge, formerly Chelsea's reserve left-back, Craig Bellamy, who has managed only five goals this season, and Nigel de Jong, who was their third choice for a new holding player behind Barcelona's Yaya Toure and Lassana Diarra, who opted to join Real Madrid instead.

Transfer Talk: Henry and Drogba to City

Kaka's decision to snub Manchester City could be for the best, as a more realistic policy sees them adjust their sights to players that could actually be of use to them, such as Didier Drogba and Thierry Henry.
Nigel de Jong and Wayne Bridge are exactly what they need to counteract Dietmar Hamann's failing legs and Michael Ball's failing, well, everything.

And for all his faults, and boy there are many, Craig Bellamy has the kind of big, swinging cojones that Jo clearly lacks.

And now Chelsea's unhappy striker Drogba could be set for a move north, possibly in part-exchange if the Robinho row is not resolved.

The Ivorian is having a bit of a nightmare at the moment but if you get him fit and tell him he's the Drog's whatsits, he is possibly the best in the business.

Out-of-favour Chelsea winger Florent Malouda is also on the Middle Eastlands radar.

Henry is a less straightforward matter and one which could take effect in the summer.

The France striker is now banging the goals in alongside forward colleagues Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi after a difficult debut season in Barcelona.

But he is missing his daughter Tea, and City reckon they could get him to agree a switch back to England provided he wins some silverware with Los Cules.

A fee of £10 million and a weekly wage of £100,000 would do the trick, provided the City circus does not implode.

Despite Valencia's financial difficulties, they have demanded a whopping £135m for David Silva and David Villa.

Even City aren't stupid enough to pay that much, and Henry-Drogba would be a far more cost-effective solution that would not require acclimatisation to the England game.

Chelsea, meanwhile, could make a move for Fiorentina's Portuguese defender Manuel da Costa as cover for John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho.

Da Costa, 22, is unsettled in Florence and is a favourite of Luiz Felipe Scolari, who called him up to the Portugal squad despite him only being half-Portuguese - through his father: Da Costa is French born-and-bred, has never lived in Portugal, barely speaks the language and has a Moroccan mother.

Sam Allardyce is at it again. Eidur Gudjohnsen has tired of being on the fringes at Barcelona and Blackburn have offered him first-team football, with Roque Santa Cruz likely to end up at Manchester City.

A loan move has been touted, and Allardyce is known to Gudjohnsen as it was he who presided over the Iceland striker at Bolton in the season that saw him earn a move to Chelsea in 2000.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is preparing for life without Jimmy Bullard by bidding for Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock, who is being touted as the new, um, Jimmy Bullard.

Goal-scoring midfielder Stock plied his trade in the lower leagues until his mid 20's and rose to prominence at a side cutting their teeth in the Championship - just like Bullard.

Unlike Bullard, though, he does not have silly, Seventies hair and does not play the mandolin. Neither is he particularly good

Hodgson has not been impressed with how Dickson Etuhu has coped with filling in for the injured Bullard, while Leon Andreasen is viewed as no more than utility back-up.

The Whites have also been linked to Nuremberg's bustling Greek striker Angelos Charisteas.

The former Werder Bremen and Ajax man scored the winning goal against Portugal in the Euro 2004 final but, after a short spell at Feyenoord, his stay at Nuremberg was soured by their relegation from the Bundesliga.

He would cost £1.5m, although the German side's team manager Martin Bader said that "we are in no rush to sell Angelos and Fulham are in no rush to buy".

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has lost a massive wodge of cash in the credit crunch and Toon's transfer targets have been scaled-down accordingly. A couple of money signings are expected, but squad-fillers will be loans and free transfers.

One player who is probably going to don the black and white in the next week or so is former Rangers and Schalke winger Peter Lovenkrands.

The Dane has been on trial at St James' Park and, after impressing in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Carlisle, Joe Kinnear said that director Derek Llambias is "thrashing out some sort of deal to the end of the season". Which sounds a little violent but ultimately positive.

Former Dortmund defender Ahmed Reda Madouni is also on trial at the club.

West Ham's policy of bringing in cut-price players and making a profit seems set to continue with South Africa defender Bryce Moon the latest to catch Gianluca Nani's expert eye, Zenit St Petersburg striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has appeared on Bolton 's radar, Sochaux schoolboy Yven Moyo is being eyed by Manchester United while Germany Under-21 defender Serdar Tasci is expected to stay at Stuttgart despite interest from Arsenal.

Anelka sees Italian job for English trio-Champions League

Chelsea's French forward Nicolas Anelka confidently claimed the three English teams facing Italian opposition in the Champions League second round will record a clean sweep.
His won team face Juventus, reigning champions Manchester United take on Inter Milan while Arsenal were drawn against Roma.

"If I had to make a bet I'd say 3-0 to the English. Chelsea, Manchester and Arsenal progressing ahead of Juve, Inter and Roma," he said. "Watch what happens but anything can happen."

Anelka is particularly looking forward to coming up against Juve's David Trezeguet, who came through the French junior system at the same time as the man known as 'the Incredible Sulk'.

"It's a huge match, Juve are top drawer," he said. "It's always tough against Italian teams, tactically they're the best in Europe. If we don't break them down, if we don't score, it will be very risky for us.

"We have to score in the first leg (at home) and not concede in order to have a chance in Turin."

Trezeguet, who has played only eight minutes this season due to injury, should be available for the clash.

"That's terrible news for us. I admire David, there aren't many goalscorers like him around. He was born to score goals. "Juve are as good as Inter. (Alessandro) Del Piero is an incredible talent. (Pavel) Nedved, (Gianluigi) Buffon, everyone. We'll have to be at our best to beat Juve."

Anelka has played for eight different teams in four different countries during his career but never in Italy, and that despite being married to Italian singer Barbara Tausia.

However, the 29-year-old, whose family hails from the island of Martinique, revealed he came close a couple of times.

"My wife and her family are from Italy. I met her in Paris, she was on TV with her eurodance group Eu4ya," he said.

"She sings and dances beautifully and she's an even better cook, Italian of course.

"But I don't yet know Italy. (Sven-Goran) Eriksson wanted me at Lazio when Arsenal sold me to Real Madrid and I could have gone to Juventus if (Didier) Deschamps had stayed."

Anelka has had a potted career, winning the double in England with Arsenal, the Champions League with Real Madrid and the Turkish title with Fenerbahce.

He also won the European Championships with France in 2000, when they beat Italy in the final, but was not part of the squad that won the World Cup on home soil in 1998, nor three years ago when they lost to Italy in the final in Germany.

Manchester City forward Robinho has again been linked with a move to Chelsea after club and player gave differing accounts of his departure from a Tenerife training camp. It's almost as if the last six months didn't happen. Manchester City are in mid-table and Robinho could be on his way to Stamford Bridge after falling out with the club he is contracted to.

The former Real Madrid star is set to be fined £300,000 after doing a runner and is alleged to have told compatriot Luiz Felipe Scolari he wants to join him in London.

City chairman Garry Cook's admission he hadn't the foggiest where Robinho was suggests the player's relationship with his club has broken down.

While Robinho remained incommunicado for City, the Brazilian media found him swiftly enough - he claimed he was attending to a 'family issue' and told City he was leaving.

The whole sorry mess means Peter Kenyon may find a use for those prematurely-printed Robinho shirts after all.

The Eastlands club could also lose another important striker with Aston Villa and Tottenham joining Chelsea and Arsenal in the race to sign wonderkid Daniel Sturridge on a cheap deal.

The City academy product is frustrated at not being offered a new deal with the club seemingly more interested in wasting time chasing players who have little interest in joining them.

Another pie in which Harry Redknapp has his predictably active finger is Chelsea reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini. The Italian, last seen in May 2004, is reportedly in talks with Spurs , who will allow back-up Cesar Sanchez to join Valencia on a free.

With the coffers swollen by the paperwork-dependent £14 million sale of Wilson Palacios to Spurs, Wigan boss Steve Bruce is expected to give his squad that little boost required to ensure they stay in the top half this season.

Long-term deals for strike duo Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki have been long-discussed, but Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is the latest goal-getter to be touted as a JJB target. Wolves are unlikely to want to sell as the former Manchester United trainee's 16 goals have helped fire them to a big lead at the top of the Championship.

Wigan's Olivier Kapo, who has struggled to break into the first team since moving from Birmingham in the summer, could return to France with Auxerre.

Moody, temperamental strikers are the order of the day for Hull City.

After Tigers boss Phil Brown reportedly tired of on-loan Marlon King's antics, he is prepared to turn his attentions instead to Middlesbrough's allegedly reformed Egyptian Mido.

Man City striker Darius Vassell is expected to leave Eastlands this month and could join Sheffield United for £1.25m, Tottenham outcast Gilberto is reported to be arranging a free transfer to Getafe after being told he has no future at the club, Brescia striker Savio Nsereko is the latest Gianluca Nani recommendation that could join West Ham, while Lyon have joined Paris St-Germain in the 'race' to sign Hammers wide-man Julien Faubert.

Drogba out of OM's price range

Marseille have dismissed talk of a move for Didier Drogba, describing the Chelsea striker as "inaccessible" due to financial reasons.Drogba's form in his last spell at OM in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League earned him the French Player of the Year award, as well as bringing him to the attention of the west Londoners, who paid in the region of £24million for his services in 2004.

La Provence newspaper on Tuesday reported Marseille were considering an audacious bid to bring the 30-year-old back to the club.

But sporting director Jose Anigo told French radio station RMC: "The problem with Didier is that even if he wanted to come to Marseille, there is a financial problem.

"For a French club, he represents 12million euros per year. He is inaccessible to all French clubs."

Anigo also revealed a loan deal taking defender Gael Givet to Blackburn was "being finalised".

And on the day the club reached agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign Brazilian striker Brandao, Anigo revealed there could be more players loaned out, including young attackers Elliot Grandin and Mamadou Samassa.

"Maybe we will lend Grandin," he said. "About Samassa, we have to ask ourselves, because we must not stop young people being given playing time."

Anigo also moved to clear up speculation about the future of coach Eric Gerets, who has been linked with a move away from the club because of reported differences over transfer policy.

He said: "We do not want it, let that be clear: nobody at the club wishes him to depart. He has no problem at the club."

Roma look to Continue Hot Form

Roma head into Sunday's Serie A game at Torino a far different side from the one that opened the campaign.Judging from their current form and eighth-place position in Serie A, it is hard to believe that coach Luciano Spalletti was in danger of being fired, and that Roma seemed to have a slim chance of being alive in the Champions League in January.

The Giallorossi have been proving since their Rome derby win over Lazio on November 16 that even good teams can have extremely bad starts. Spalletti's side have gone from strength to strength ever since, with a 2-0 midweek victory over Sampdoria their latest triumph.

That win closed the gap on fourth-placed Napoli to just six points.

Including the victory over Lazio, Roma have taken 19 out of a possible 24 points.

With the two-goal hero from last weekend's 2-2 draw against AC Milan, Montenegrin striker Mirko Vucinic, and France defender Philippe Mexes missing the Samp game through suspension but now available again, the Romans will be supremely confident.

Spalletti has been all smiles this week after Roma came from a goal down to draw with Milan and followed that up with the home success over Samp thanks to two strikes from Julio Baptista.

"This is a very important win for us," he said.

"The fundamental thing is that we played a good game. However, we still have a lot of work to do in order to achieve our aim which is to finish in the top four."

Spalletti has also been reassured over the future of Mexes, who has refuted speculation in Italy that he is on his way to AC Milan.

"I cannot deny that Milan is a great team," Mexes said. "But I am very happy here, I have a contract with Roma and I would like to stay here as long as possible."

Rivals Torino will be looking to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat at Genoa last weekend.

The outcome marked Toro's fourth loss in five games and saw the Granata drop to 18th in the standings.

A win on Sunday could see Walter Novellino's men climb out of the relegation zone, with the Turin outfit just one point behind Bologna who hold the last safety position.

Toro, who have one of the worst defensive records in the competition with 32 goals given away, made a move in the transfer market by bringing back Argentinian defender Paolo Dellafiore.

Dellafiore returns to Toro after a year at Palermo and is expected to start in place of Marco Pisano, who serves a one-match ban.

"I am grateful to Torino for having wanted me back," said Dellafiore. "I hope I can help the team defend their Serie A status."

Toro midfielder Blerim Dzemaili will join Pisano in the stands this weekend as he is also suspended.

The visitors will be without midfielder Simone Perrotta, who serves a one-match ban, and injured captain Francesco Totti.

Rivaldo Said Messi as World's best

Former world player of the year Rivaldo has hailed Lionel Messi, not Cristiano Ronaldo, as the best player in the world at the moment.Ronaldo this week added the FIFA World Player of the Year title to his FIFPro and Ballon d'Or awards after last season scoring 42 goals to help Manchester United win the Champions League and Primera Liga.

The Portugal international finished well clear of second-placed Messi in the voting for the FIFA World Player of the Year, but in the eyes of 1999 winner Rivaldo, it is the Argentinian ace who is top dog.

"Between Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, I go with Messi. For me he is the best in the world," said the former Brazil international.

"Cristiano is very good and you cannot argue about him getting all those awards because he has won a lot of titles and scored 42 goals, but I'm with Leo.

"For me, Messi is more aggressive than Cristiano, he reminds me of myself. Leo has a good attitude, can decide games and he is always trying to go forward no matter how many kicks he gets. And all this at only 21 years old."

Rivaldo also believes Messi, who was runner-up to Kaka in 2007, will replace Ronaldo as the FIFA World Player of the Year if he and Barca carry on as they have been doing.

Messi has already netted 20 goals in 22 competitive matches this season, helping Barca to a 12-point lead at the top of La Liga, and into the last 16 of both the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

"Next season, if Leo and Barca continue the same, Leo will win the Champions League, the league

the FIFA World Player of the Year," said former Nou Camp favourite Rivaldo to El Mundo Deportivo.

Kaka decided to stay with AC Milan

Milan: Kaka decided to stay with AC Milan, ending talks over a record-breaking transfer bid from Manchester City reported to be worth $147 million.

"All the messages coming my way said to choose with my heart," the 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder told Milan Channel on Monday night. "And at the end that's what the choice was. It was absolutely not economical."

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, AC Milan's owner, returned from Middle East peace talks in Egypt and met for 1½ hours with team vice president Adriano Galliani, then made the announcement on Italian television.

"For Kaka, money isn't everything," Berlusconi said in a telephone interview with "Processo di Biscardi." ''When I heard he preferred to stay, that he hadn't thought about losing a chance for a higher salary and that he put the values of the club, friendship and fans affection above all else, I said, 'Come on,' and we hugged."

FIFA's player of the year in 2007 after leading AC Milan to the European Champions League title, Kaka is under contract with the Italian club through 2013. His actual name is Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite.

"At the end what counted was my history, where my ties are and where my heart really lies," he said.

Earlier, a group of about 500 fans protested outside Milan's downtown offices, lighting flares and chanting "Don't sell Kaka!"

Afterward, about 50 fans moved toward Kaka's home and chanted, "Stay with us, Ricardo," to which Kaka replied by approaching a window with a Milan jersey in hand and beat his hand three times on his heart, sending the fans into delirium, the ANSA news agency and Gazzetta dello Sport's Web site reported.

Eventually, a worker at Kaka's house went outside and asked the fans to quiet down because they were disturbing Kaka's child. The fans said they would leave if they could see their idol once more. Kaka obliged and approached his window again and the fans left.

Manchester City was bought in August by an Abu Dhabi consortium and is seeking to become one of Europe's top clubs.

"Following a meeting in Milan today, the club felt that it was unlikely that the two parties could reach common ground for an agreement," City said. "The discussions reached only a preliminary stage and the player was not involved at any time. No commercial terms were framed."

South America Under-20: Uruguay beat Bolivia

Uruguay have begun the South American Under 20 Championships with a 2-0 win over Bolivia. Both goals were scored in the second half.

After a goalless first half, the Uruguayans needed only seven minutes in the second for Nacional de Montevideo winger Nicolas Lodeiro to break the deadlock.

Uruguay held on to their narrow lead and Lodeiro even added a second near full time to earn his side their first three points of the tournament, which leaves them in first place in Group B. Later today, tournament favorites Brazil play Paraguay.

"He [Pennant] is quick and technically very gifted. He can have a go at defenders" - Tony Adams

Portsmouth have signed Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant on loan until the end of the season.

Manager Tony Adams is delighted to have concluded the short-term deal for the 26-year-old who is eligible for Saturday's FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Swansea City.

Adams said: "I have known him for a long time. We were together at Arsenal a long, long time ago. He was the new kid on the block and a very exciting prospect.

"He is quick and technically very gifted. He can have a go at defenders.

"I saw him play with Peter Crouch for Liverpool at Fulham last year and he was constantly getting past their left-back and getting crosses in for Crouchie.

"That's a good combination that I wanted to put back together.

"He is going to put some good crosses in and hopefully weigh in with a few goals himself."

Pennant, whose will be a free agent at the end of the season, reportedly attracted interest from Real Madrid and Pompey are delighted to have secured his services for the rest of the campaign.

Meanwhile executive chairman Peter Storrie also confirmed deals to sign old-boy Gary O'Neil and Valencia midfielder Edu are now "dead", while a move for Inter Milan's Patrick Vieira is unlikely to happen in the January transfer window.

He added: "Patrick is someone we would be very keen to bring here.

"Obviously, he is very well known to Tony [Adams], but my understanding is that he's got an injury and that won't be possible in this window.

"With Gary O'Neil and Edu, the clubs changed their mind - there wasn't much we could do about that.

"As far as I understand, both of those deals are now dead."

''Kaka Is About More Than Money''

Spurns Manchester City's Big Money Offer so whatever the reason was—Kaka’s religious fanaticism, David Beckham’s insistence that Manchester City would never be as great as United or the fact that he just didn’t want to leave Italy (or, alternately, live in England)—the Brazilian maestro has decided to reject Sheikh Mansour and City’s bid for his services. The final rejected figure would’ve been around $150 million bucks, which actually delighted the Professional Footballers’ Association CEO Gordon Taylor. He felt that the bid would’ve put an albatross around the team’s neck, and subsequently, around the necks of every other team whose high-priced talent would want Kaka money. Personally, we feel that Kaka saw the message from God when seven people were killed over the weekend in the Brazilian church where he got married. Either that, or he was swayed by the throngs of people who chanted outside his window in Italy that they wanted him to stay.

Premier League: Liverpool 1–1 Everton

Liverpool missed the chance to return to the Premier League summit after being held to a 1-1 draw by neighbours Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Fernando Torres missed a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the 28th minute as he surprisingly flicked a right-foot shot against the post from six yards.

Spanish winger Albert Riera then sent a 25-yard shot flashing just wide of Tim Howard's right-hand post.

Torres felt he should have had a penalty three minutes after the restart as a Phil Jagielka caught his right leg, but referee Howard Webb was not interested and waved play on.

Liverpool finally opened the scoring after 68 minutes when skipper Steven Gerrard took a pass from Riera before crashing home a 30-yard drive to send Anfield into raptures.

But with three minutes remaining, Tim Cahill headed home Mikel Arteta's free-kick to become the first player since Dixie Dean in the 1930s to score for the Toffees in three Merseyside derbies and deny Liverpool top spot.
